So you’re building a knockout web site, a cool mobile app, or kickstarting an startup idea. But how can you gain a better understanding of your users – your customers – to begin deciphering their needs? How can you figure out who would be interested, or if there’s going to be a market? Who is really your target audience?

In this talk you explore some user experience design (UX) tools and activities that can help us refine objectives, pave the way for making decisions, determine the shape of a minimum viable product and enhance how we translate brand values to voice and design.

Jina Bolton - CSS Workflow with SASS

Jina Bolton - CSS Workflow with SASS

Josh Brewer - Design is About Relationships

It’s easy to get so caught up in theory and process that we forget that design is about relationships. It’s not about Photoshop comps or bytes of code. It’s about people. And content. And, especially today, their devices. It’s about the interplay between content and form, between real-time data and how, when and why we share and consume it. It’s about enabling connections where they couldn’t have existed before. It’s about focusing on creating experiences that are more meaningful, more delightful, and ultimately, more human.

Debbie Millman - The Top 10 things I wish I knew when I...

Debbie Millman - The Top 10 things I wish I knew when I graduated from college @Creative Mornings NYC

Aaron Walter - The Real Me @ ParisWeb 2012

While some companies use their brand as an opaque facade to hide their questionable practices, others are opening up to their audience and sharing their true personality. The result is a more honest relationship with customers. Through real world examples, you’ll see the key benefits personality creates for companies.

We’ll discuss how to create Design Personas, the starting point for brand personality, and discover the relationship between brand voice and tone.

Brad Frost - Beyond Media Queries: An anatomy of an adaptive web...

Brad Frost - Beyond Media Queries: An anatomy of an adaptive web experience @ Smashing Conf

Media queries may be responsive design’s secret sauce, but we know there’s a whole lot more that goes into crafting amazing adaptive experiences. By dissecting an example of a mobile-first responsive design, we’ll uncover the principles of adaptive design and highlight some considerations for creating contextually-aware Web experiences. We’ll go over emerging mobile Web best practices and responsive patterns that can assist in our journey toward a future-friendly Web.

Marko Dugonjić - Advanced Typesetting for Web @ Parisweb 2012

Marko Dugonjić - Advanced Typesetting for Web @ Parisweb 2012

Cameron Moll - The burden of being creative

Cameron Moll - The burden of being creative

Frank Chimero - Do things, the long, hard, stupid way @Do...

Frank Chimero - Do things, the long, hard, stupid way @Do Lectures

For many of us, the work we most value is imbued with a sense of craft, honesty, and purpose. We’re at our best when responses are instinctive, not bound by rigid tools or inflexible methodologies. Craftsmanship makes our work more meaningful to us, and more valuable to those who commission or consume it.

The progressive web is built upon a wealth of discovery, examination, and sharing. We rarely settle and this is to our credit, but we must never forget that as responsible practitioners and ambitious pioneers we should embrace the ebb and flow, and all that is unique about the medium.

Simon will look at how all this affects us as individuals, and our industry as a whole, taking stock of where we are now and where we are headed.

—
This talk is from the Ready to Inspire Conference which was held on 11th December 2012 at the “Stadsgehoorzaal” in Leiden, The Netherlands

Josh Brewer - Responsive Times Call For Responsive Measures...

Josh Brewer - Responsive Times Call For Responsive Measures @smashingconf

The talk is an attempt to deprogram our approach to Web design for the last 15 years by taking a look at the history of graphic design (type, grids, etc) and how it has shaped our thinking (positively & negatively). The presentation discusses new approaches to designing responsively and what we can learn from the past.

Jessica Hische - Grab the reins abd fucking do it @ Creative...

Jessica Hische - Grab the reins abd fucking do it @ Creative Mornings Vancouver, June 2012

Naomi Atkinson - Going Beyond at Beyond Tellerand 2011.

Being a true success in your art, industry, or day to day job requires pushing beyond what comes easily and naturally to you. It’s about making yourself stand out in an otherwise endless crowd of others striving for the same. Naomi took a look at how people stand tall in an industry distanced far from ours – the land of celebrity. What behaviors and patterns can we learn from their successes, and how can we bring this into our everyday work ethic?

Andy Clarke - Encouraging Better Client Participation in...

Andy Clarke - Encouraging Better Client Participation in Responsive Design Projects

Jason Santa Maria - NO - Creative Mornings

We face a challenge: to ensure our design responses are informed more by our thinking than the tools we use. Absorbed by day-to-day execution, we can forget the importance of mistakes and accidents — of balancing intent with experimentation. Failure is valuable, provided we’re mindful of why. Embrace the unpredictable nature of everything, and stay mindful. It’s how we lace our actions with meaning.

Mike Kus - Designing for humans - DIBI conference 2011
